The 'heart' of these air heat exchangers is the finned coil, assembled from tubes with fins to increase the heat transfer surface area; it is used to cool many different types of liquid media. In this case, the hot fluid stream flows through the tubes and is cooled by ambient air forced across the finned coil.
Air-cooled heat exchangers for process liquids are called 'radiators'. Air-cooled liquid coolers for HVAC applications and power systems are called 'dry coolers'.
