Natural rubber latex is secreted from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, which originated in South America and is now commercially grown in Asia and Africa. Transporting raw natural latex across the world to various global markets is economically inefficient, so it must be processed before shipment.

Centrifuges are a critical component of this process—a high-speed rotating bowl with conical discs breaks down the collected latex and separates it into a rubber-rich concentrate and a "skim" fraction with low rubber content.
